Decisions, Decisions – Putting Your Elderly Parent in a Home

As your parents get older, they may not be able to care for themselves like they used to. As their body starts breaking down due to natural aging, they may not be able to drive themselves everywhere they need to go. If you find that your parent no longer has the ability to care for themselves any longer, then you may have to decide whether or not to let them come live with you.

Any help that you can provide would definitely be appreciated. Why wouldn’t you want to help them out when they helped raise you to become the person you are. Your older parent would probably enjoy having all the company around when they come to live with you.

However, living with an elderly parent can be a major problem if you’re married. There will be one more person living in the house. You and your spouse will have that much less time to spend together.

If you already have kids, then things will get that much more difficult with another person living in the home. Things will really get bad if you don’t have that much space in your home to accommodate another person. Thanks to the fact that there will be another mouth to feed, you’ll also need to bring more food in the home.

Your spouse certainly may not enjoy the fact that your elderly parent is living with you. It’s especially problematic if the two of them don’t get along well. If your parent starts living there, you may be faced with huge problems in your marriage.

If you aren’t too keen on letting your parent move in, then you may want to move them into an assisted living facility. You won’t have to worry about your parent needing anything. Companionship certainly won’t be a problem since there will be a ton of people there to make friends with.

However, many people would prefer not to live in one of these homes. Some parents won’t understand that it’s in their best interests. However, if it would put unnecessary strain on your marriage, then it would certainly be the wise thing to do. Many marital problems could be avoided if they agreed to live there.

Choosing between your parent and spouse can be a very difficult decision. Most parents would rather live with their child rather than in a nursing home. Your spouse would probably vote to move your parent into a home in order to avoid all the associated problems.
